Go For It!

Over 3 decades ago, Tim Hansel (the founder of Summit Expedition, the organizational forerunner of Summit Adventure) suffered a serious mountaineering accident in the Palisades area of the Sierra Nevada.  This accident left him permanently disabled and changed the course of his life.  Shortly after his accident, Tim was discussing the limited number of options for people with disabilities (of any kind) to experience the power of a wilderness trip. As the result of that conversation and several others, the GoForIt! Course was begun. At the time, GoForIt! was one of the first programs in North America to specifically take people with disabilities into the wilderness.

GFI! challenges the perceived limitations of both disabled and able-bodied participants through a variety of Christ-centered activities designed with special needs in mind.  Many of the standard Summit course components, activities such as rock climbing, rappelling, and backpacking, are adapted to accommodate and challenge people with a variety of developmental and/or physical disabilities.

Participants of GoForIt! come from all over the country with a variety of mental and physical characteristics that range from mild to severe. We’d like to invite you on the next GoForIt! Course—it might be an adventure that will change your life!

Due to the high level of assistance needed for this course (2 or 3 able-bodied assistants are usually required for each participant), volunteers are welcome to assist with this course.
